Artist's Statement

The sunlight breaks through summer storm clouds as Cate and her husband Jerry walk the ridges and mountain meadows of the high Sierras. Ancient shifting and upheaval of rock has created lines, shapes, shadows and monuments. Huge debris fields sweep below as light and shadow play across the magnificent landscape.

Her eyes search the rock outcroppings looking for clean lines of broken rock and the composition they form. She parks herself on a rock and in her book sketches small drawings of a few lines. She captures the composition she wants frequently from just a small rock formation.

Back at her studio in the California foothills, the simple line drawings are the backbone of her work. Now the painting begins. The structure of the line drawings gives her freedom to play with color. Cate explains "Beginning with a strong composition means that now I can cut loose and enjoy laying down the color. I have favorite colors but don't limit myself. I paint quickly balancing the use of bold colors with rich hues from nature throughout the painting."

Cate has her own unique style with bright colors and strong natural elements of design. Her paintings are semi-abstract and move and flow with the drama of the Sierra land forms.
